INTRODUCTION

The Gorkha people predominate in the Indian states of Sikkim, Assam and the Darjeeling District in West Bengal. They are also found in large numbers in Indian occupied Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and the North Eastern States of Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Mizoram. The Gorkhas also predominate in the Republic of Nepal. A sizeable Gorkha population are to be found in Myanmar, Pakistani administered Kashmir (known as Azad or Free Kashmir in Pakistan). Bhutanese citizens of Gorkha descent are known as Lhotsampas in Bhutan.
