Sikkim Janata Parishad was formed on the 23rd of February 19771 by Nar Bahadur Bhandari previously the President of Sikkim United Independent Front Party. Sikkim Janata Parishad contested the 1979 State Assembly Elections and won 16 seats. However, this was still not enough to form the Government. The party was able to rope-in an independent MLA, Rev. Lachen Gomchen Rimpoche and form the Government. Bhandari became the first Gorkha to hold the post of Chief Minister in India.

In May 1984, the Government was dismissed due to corruption charges while Sikkim Janata Parishad still held majority in the State Assembly.

Sikkim Janata Parishad was dissolved the 24th of May 1984 with the formation of Sikkim Sangram Parishad.
