In 1973-74 during the height of the pro-democracy movement in Sikkim, Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal declared for the first General Elections to be held in Sikkim. Sikkim United Independent Front Party was formed by Nar Bahadur Bhandari and his associates to contest this election. However, Sikkim United Independent Front Party lost the election and Nar Bahadur Bhandari and his associates were soon arrested under Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) by Kazi Lhendup Dorjee1 led Government. Sikkim United Independent Front Party was dissolved. In October 1977, after his release from prison, Nar Bahadur Bhandari formed Sikkim Janata Parishad.
